Now, this Sunday afternoon, Jordan said, “Meg, let’s at least give Jacq a chance; give her a week and if you still feel the same way, I’ll take her back to the streets… I’ll even try to find her mother.”

They sat in silence awhile until Margaret rose wearily and said, “Very well, I’ll do as you ask… let’s prepare a room for her.”

Jordan followed her upstairs and Margaret gathered bedding from a hall closet and carried it into the last room in the hall. Jordan said, “You’ve got ten bedrooms and this is the smallest of them all… no bigger than a closet.”

“If she stays longer than a week she can always be moved to a larger one. Please help me get this room ready… the servants are busy with lunch… bring in that crib from the landing.”

As they were finishing with the bed they heard Judith call out from the hallway, “Which room? Where do you want her?”

Jordan opened the door and beckoned. She released Jacq and left. Where the girl’s scalp could be seen, it was very red, because Judith had vigorously applied a strong home remedy to kill the lice, and, as her brown hair was thick and proved naturally curly, the remaining inch or so of hair caused her pale and flawless complexion to shine. Her dark brows framed gray eyes, which were lidded with thick double eyelashes. She had a rather long nose and thin mouth, resting on a very pointed and determined-looking chin. Shorn of her hair, her neck appeared unusually long, and the pale yellow dress that Margaret had selected for her was much too large.

“This will be your room for now,” Jordan said.

Jacq crossed to the papered wall and ran the fingers of her right hand along it. She examined the crib and shook it gently until it rocked. In the corner of the room was a small bookcase with four shelves; she selected a book, opened it and began to sniff the pages.

“Can you read?” Jordan asked.

“Some. I knows some words.” She studied the cover, then placed it on the upper shelf, where there were less books.

Margaret walked over, retrieved it, and placed it back on the lower shelf. “You can’t mix them,” she said.

“How’s that?”

“Jane Austin is a female author. The top shelf is for male authors. It’s important to keep them separate.”

“Because… why?”

“Because,” she turned to Jordan for support, but his expression was noncommittal. She looked back at Jacq, “Well, because that’s just the way it’s done in… in polite society.”

Jacq rolled her eyes at the dumbest thing she’d heard in her life.

Margaret looked embarrassed and said crisply, “It’s time to go downstairs for lunch.”

Jacq would not eat. She sat with her head bowed for a few minutes, then said, “I ain’t feelin’ so well. Can I go back to the room now?”
